On Becoming A Guinea Fowl

30th September 2025

By Rungano Nyoni | Zambia | 2025 |1hr 35m | English & Bemba with English subtitles |PG

On Becoming a Guinea Fowl is a complex and intelligent film that unfolds from its mysterious surrealist opening scenes. Shula and her cousin Nsana perform the rituals demanded of them at the funeral of their uncle, while they share and process the abuse that they and others received as children from this uncle. The respect for their family and traditions plays out against the urgent need to address abuse, misogyny and denial. Contemporary middle class Zambian life is explored alongside the maintaining of traditional cultural beliefs and rituals

"With the cinematographer David Gallego, the sound designer Olivier Dandré and a superb ensemble cast, Nyoni has crafted indelible tableaux, powered by dark survivors’ humour, blistering originality and retaliatory fury." Tara Brady, Irish Times
